Zen and the art of yuppiness
More brilliant reaction to the hipster dilemma, this time from my friend Katy:
If there was a way to infuse the pragmatism of yuppiness – ie work hard, get ahead, save your money, get married, procreate, etc – with the rejection of corporate roboticism – ie work 40 hrs a week for a 3% raise each year, keep your mouth shut, submit to the man – well, then maybe we’d really be somewhere. Maybe the very fact that people like you and I DO struggle with this paradox means that there is some hope - ?
Faloonaville likes to think we are yuppies who maintain indie cred. Because we have a blog, don’t own a car, and enjoy independent films (while we are sucking the tit of corporate America, and polishing our granite counter tops). This is what Joan Didion would call Magical Thinking. I call it deep unending ambivalence.
